The symposium aims to empower and encourage young women to consider and choose engineering, science, and technology fields as a career path. Women make up about half of the world’s population, however, their contribution to the fields is much less with the worldwide average of ~14% and Singapore R&D of ~30% (Yearbook of Statistics).
There are many crossroads in young women’s lives where they have to make decisions to stay or not to stay in EST. The earlier crossroads start at middle school and upon graduating from high school and choosing majors at the university. The later ones are graduating from college and job opportunities, child bearing years, family, as well as cultural.
Despite the various considerations at these crossroads, there are many women who still choose to contribute to EST. The Inaugural WEST Symposium, held in conjunction with Marie Curie’s 147th birthday, brings together women who represent generations of engineers, scientists, and technologists to share their passion for engineering, science, and technology, and their motivations to choose EST as their career paths!
